Exodus
May 10, 1940—Exodus.
Air raid shelter in wine cellar of Hotel Rollot in St. Mihiel, in Lorraine, France.

Our host, our uncle Hermann, was vacationing in a Belgian Spa when the Germans invaded Luxembourg; thus, our father commandeered the Wolf family car, with our twenty-five-year old cousin René Wolf in the driver's seat and organized our flight towards France as part of an unending column of refugees, on foot, bicycle, automobile or horse or cow-drawn carriage.

After a day of stop-and-go driving through, and with, a horde of humanity fleeing the German invasion, we arrived in the town of St.Mihiel where, in view of the German bombardments, we were allowed to stop overnight in the wine-cellars of a hotel.
